Amanera

The fact that Amanera offers Hispaniola’s most refined stay is evident from a mile away. That’s the length of Playa Grande, the immaculate beach that fronts this Bali-inspired resort on the Dominican Republic’s rugged north coast. .

Amanera offers extensive dining, spa and recreational facilities. The property’s main pavilion, Casa Grande, houses the bar and lounge, a discreet reception, a library and a convivial cigar bar, and leads to Amanera’s signature restaurant with its indoor and outdoor dining areas. Beyond the restaurant is the main swimming pool. Designed to maximize the extraordinary views, each of the 24 one-bedroom, freestanding Casitas enjoys unobstructed ocean vistas from an expansive terrace. Fourteen of them have private swimming pools.

Take a jungle trek, get a seaside massage, or sip Santo Libres at the beach club, then puff a hand-rolled Dominican puro in the cigar lounge. Rees Jones renovated the adjacent golf course, touted as “the Pebble Beach of the Caribbean.”

Nearest airport: Puerto Plata (POP), 75 minutes by car

When to go

We recommend a 4-6 night stay from October through June to enjoy the sun and beaches. Our favorite time to enjoy pleasant weather while avoiding crowds is early December and April-June.
